i got the travelin’ blues

too many miles
and dim lights in motel rooms
georgia peaches are sweet
but they ‘aint got no taste without you
i’ll have a buiscuit with butter
at the bluebird grill tomorrow
and stir my spoon in a cup of black coffee
tryin’ to stay awake
cause baby, i’m losing sleep over you
this sunday i’ll go to ebenezer
i’ll pray for social justice
but i ‘aint gonna lie
i’ll pray to see you soon too

daughter’s lullaby

in a chair
by the corner window
where I rock her
to dream
under a star’s glow
is where I see
my dreams wake
from a slumber
they fell in
long ago

por la chicago

at this storefront window…
where fancy folks dine
ma used to wash
while i clung to her
like the clothes we dried
and wore to school
daddy to work
his clothes
drenched in
sudor, malboros
& south water market blues
he wore them well
them teamster jackets
i rocked gym shoes
and shyly whispered
my name to strangers
as i dropped stolen quarters
in donkey kong arcade games
ma looked through pockets
& picked at lint dreams
at this storefront window…
a hipster wonders
why i linger
his beard grown to style
and not because 3am shifts
made it hard to care
